Many care teams suggest calling when contractions come every 5 minutes, last 1 minute, for 1 hour (5-1-1). Follow the advice you were given.

Whatever the timing, call your doctor or midwife right away if your waters break, you have bleeding, severe or constant pain or a fever, your baby is moving less, or you are less than 37 weeks pregnant.

How to time contractions

Duration is the time from the start of a contraction to its end. The interval (frequency) is the time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next.

Irregular tightenings that fade over time or ease with rest are often practice contractions (Braxton Hicks). Labour contractions get steadily closer together, longer and stronger.

Your doctor or midwife decides when you should come in; this timer only helps you measure.
