A math app for kids: what does Math+ teach?
Math+ teaches the four operations from the ground up. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division each have 50 levels, arranged like a map: every level builds on the one before, so a child always sees where they are and what comes next. Division includes division with remainders, and multiplication covers the full times tables step by step.
The lessons follow a simple idea: see it, then solve it. A problem is first shown with dots, groups or pictures and only then written with numbers. That way a child learns that 3 × 4 means three groups of 4, and practices an idea they understand rather than an answer they memorized. The four core topics are free and comfortable to use from age 5.
How to learn the times tables the easy way
The times tables look like 100 separate facts, but most of them follow simple rules. Multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 5, 9 and 10 each has a short rule, such as halving a number and adding a zero to multiply by 5. Because swapping the factors does not change the answer, half of what is left comes for free.
That leaves only 15 hard facts: 3 × 3, 3 × 4, 3 × 6, 3 × 7, 3 × 8, 4 × 4, 4 × 6, 4 × 7, 4 × 8, 6 × 6, 6 × 7, 6 × 8, 7 × 7, 7 × 8 and 8 × 8. In the Mental Multiplication topic of Math+, each of these 15 facts has its own memorable rhyme. The child says the rhyme out loud and the answer sticks with it. The rhymes are written separately for every language, so they rhyme naturally in English too.
Moving beyond finger counting: mental addition and subtraction
Many children add and subtract by counting on their fingers for a long time. That is not wrong, but it gets slow as numbers grow and makes mistakes easy. Rather than banning finger counting, it works better to show children faster ways to think about numbers.
The Stop Counting on Fingers topic of Math+ teaches those ways across 70 levels: pairs that make 10, doubles such as 6 + 6 and near doubles such as 6 + 7, making 10 first and then adding the rest, and bridging back through 10 when subtracting. As these strategies settle in, children start adding and subtracting in their heads without looking at their hands. The same methods help adults who want quicker mental math.
How the lessons work: short, game-like levels
Each level takes a few minutes and mixes different kinds of exercises, so it feels like playing math games rather than taking a test. Multiple choice and true-or-false questions, typing answers on a number pad, comparing numbers, drag-and-match, memory cards, column arithmetic, rhythmic counting strips and step-by-step word problems all appear side by side.
Motivation is part of the game. Every level awards stars, and a daily goal and daily streak turn a little practice into a routine. The free version has 5 hearts that refill every night at midnight, and you can watch a short video for an extra heart. Nutty the squirrel celebrates every right answer and stays with the learner along the way.
For parents: a few minutes a day, every day
Lasting progress in math comes from short, regular practice more than from long, occasional sessions. That is why Math+ levels take only a few minutes: one before dinner, one before bed. The daily goal and streak make it easy for a child to move forward a little every day.
The app needs no account or sign-up; you open it and start. The four core topics are free, and the free version shows ads. Math+ Premium unlocks 267 extra levels in Stop Counting on Fingers, Mental Multiplication, Mental Division and Word Problems, plus unlimited hearts, no ads and one streak restore per week. Premium is a weekly or yearly auto-renewing subscription managed in your store account.
