2nd trimester · Week 16

16 weeks pregnant

Hearing structures and meconium

The auditory system is assembling. The gut starts to hold meconium. This is a good week to schedule the mid-pregnancy anatomy scan (often 18–22 weeks).

How big is your baby at 16 weeks?

Length
11.6 cm
Weight
100 g
Size
Strawberry

On average about 11.6 cm long and 100 g. Size comparison: Strawberry.

These are averages; every baby grows at their own pace.

How is your baby developing at 16 weeks?

Eyes face more forward. The neck can straighten. Fingerprints continue to develop. Crown–rump length is often about 11–12 cm; weight near 100 g. The fetus may yawn or hiccup — you may not feel it.

What changes in your body at 16 weeks?

Round-ligament pain, constipation, and a louder pulse in your ears can appear. Some people feel the first flutters (quickening), more often if they have been pregnant before.

Tips for this week

If flutters come and go, that can be normal this early. Persistent severe abdominal pain, fever, or bleeding is not something to “wait out.” Discuss exercise: walking and prenatal-adapted strength are usually encouraged if your pregnancy is uncomplicated.
